Buona settimana!
So today was a very relaxing day in Lecce. Everyone went to bed very late so we all woke up very late. I think I opened my eyes after 11:00. I had a light breakfast and waited for other people to get up. It was beautiful outside. The weather cooled off and the temperatures were in the 70s finally! I enjoyed the breeze with the windows open in my room and I decided to catch up on my blogging. When people woke up, a group of us went to the piazza for gelato, coffee and shopping. I had pistachio gelato at he Gellateria Natale. It was delicious. Then I walked back to the dorm facilities and made a beautiful salad for lunch and hung out with my housemates.
The director Nella planned a trip for the group to go on a cruise along the heel of Italy in the Puglia region down south. But because of the low temperatures and chance of rain they decided to post pone the cruise to tomorrow at 15:00. With the whole rest of the day free, I posted more pictures on my blog and went on another walk with my friend to buy shoes and explore the city of Lecce. We walked for over 2 hours throughout the little streets, and my friend bought a pair of nice Timberland shoes. I also ordered espresso from a cafe (espresso in ghiaccio con latte di mandorla). This drink is well-known in the south of Italy and it tastes like coffee and almond. It was delicious and I can't wait to order the drink tomorrow. My friend and I ended up exploring the other part of Lecce, where we had not been to before and found vendors on the street selling jewelry and clothes. We stopped into a frutteria and I bought some fresh tomatoes, nectarines and apples. The man working the store was eager to help me carry my bags (Aunt Dianne, you were totally right, I think every man in fruit shops likes helping cute American girls). Once we bought our items we found a map to confirm our way back to Oxford and walked home.
It was time to make a yummy meal for dinner. I decided it was time to use the fresh eggplant I bought at the market the other day so I sliced the eggplant and cooked it with balsamic in a pan. I ate the eggplant on a slice of mignon (bread) with fresh tomatoes, red pepper and pesto. It was one of my favorite dinners by far. One of my friends also made eggplant with bread crumbs in the oven so I was able to try a piece of that as well.
My roommates and I chose to stay in for the evening so we could wake up early tomorrow and get a jump start to the day. We talked for awhile and started to find certain bars and areas we wanted to visit while in Lecce. At 1:15 in the morning I skyped my family for my cousin's wedding ceremony in Utah. I got to see my brother, mom, dad, and my uncle as well as the entire wedding ceremony. It was such a great feeling to be a part of something so far away from home. When I found out I had to leave for Italy before the wedding, I was devastated. Eric, is like an older brother to me, and to not be there for him on one of his most important days of his life makes me feel heart broken. But, he was very understanding with my decision and reasoning for not being able to go and I love him even more for that. I can't wait to see pictures of the reception and ceremony (because the quality of Skype wasn't the greatest) and hear his reaction to the whole day. I know I will be talking to him soon because he loves face timing me before he falls asleep.
Anyways, with that lovely ending to the evening I am going to go to sleep knowing that my family is all together in Utah celebrating a magnificent wedding. Once again Congrats to Rachel and Eric! Buona notte.
Con tanto amore,
Samantha
