Well let me tell you about my day. It was vey interesting. I woke up bright and early at 7:30 am. and had breakfast at a cafe with my friend. I decided to splurge and get a pasticciotto. This is a typical treat from Lecce and is made with sweet crust and pastry cream. (google it) It was very good and filling and I needed something that would keep me full. Then we boarded a bus to go to the Alimini Lakes to go trekking. This was an optional trip that cost extra money but I thought it would be fun. Trekking in Italy meant we were going to go on a hike and we were warned ahead of time that the trek would be 14 km (8 miles) and it would be easy and flat. I was ready for the challenge and I carried my backpack, wore my workout clothes and merrell shoes, brought my camera and wore plenty of sunscreen. I was ready to go. Our tour guides were a cute old man and woman who were absolutely clueless. The hike consisted of trekking through the woods without a path, on soil that was freshly plowed, and along the sand with the water crashing against my bare feet. I got many scratches from twigs and many prickly pears attached my socks and shoes. It was definitely an experience to remember. I loved walking next to olive trees, and seeing delicious tomatoes, squash and zucchini plants growing on the ground. We even picked fresh yellow figs from a tree and ate them. They were delicious, natural and fresh.
There were parts of the trek that consisted of walking alongside the road and through a forest with an actual path. We also walked through a park that had different stations with signs with diagrams of exercises with exercise equipment accompanying each station. It reminded me of the day when my mom and I went to this beautiful park near my high school during the summer while my brother was taking the SAT2s. We walked and talked and worked out on each station. It made me think of all the great bonding times I had with my family this summer. You really do have to cherish each moment because time truly does fly by.
The hiked ended when we got to the beach. Some people went into the water but I decided to not go in and enjoy a refreshing bottle of water in the shade (we are going to the beach on Tuesday again). We stayed at the beach for an hour and then walked a half a mile in the sand to the bus. When I got home at 15:30, I was exhausted but decided to do ab exercises with a friend before taking a shower. After I was clean I felt great and took a very long nap until dinner. I woke up starving and made myself a salad with fresh Materna bread that my housemates bought from the panetteria. I finished my homework after dinner, and then went up to the courtyard to talk to friends. We ended up giving each other massages and one of my friends tried to get some of the knots out of my back. I carry all my stress in my back and shoulders so they are always tight. I am currently laying in my bed writing this blog post, feeling more relaxed. I can't believe I only have eleven days in Lecce, before I go on vacation and then to Bologna. This part of the trip is going by so fast. But I am ready to live in a place, that I can call my home for four months. I miss everyone and I can't wait to hear from you soon. I also would love to Skype (video messaging) if anyone has an account. But I am glad everyone can see what I am up to everyday, and they enjoy reading my blog. Love everyone!
Con tanto amore,
Samantha
